Vanilla Sugar

Vanilla sugar can be used in place of regular sugar and adds a wonderful vanilla flavor to desserts. Very often German recipes ask for Vanilla Sugar (Vanillezucker). This may be hard to get or sumply pricy. It can be exchanged for Vanilla Extract, where 1 teaspoon equals one package.

2 cups

2 cups granulated sugar or confectioners' (powdered) sugar
1 vanilla bean, cut lengthwise

If vanilla bean is whole, slice down side of bean with back of knife and scrape seeds into airtight container with the sugar. Bury bean in sugar and seal tightly with lid. Let sit for 1 to 2 weeks. One tablespoon of vanilla sugar has the flavoring power of 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Additional Information

1 1/2 teaspoons equal on pack of Vanilla Sugar.
