Yeast Substitute

Out of yeast? Here's how to make an effective and inexpensive yeast substitute.


baking soda
lemon juice


In a small bowl, stir together equal parts of baking soda and lemon juice to equal the amount of yeast called for in the recipe.

How to use in a recipe

Add all ingredients according to the recipe. Add yeast substitute in the amount called for in the recipe. Bake as usual.

Additional Information

Dough does not need rise time when made with yeast substitute.

The baking soda and lemon juice need to be added last for the reaction to work properly.

For best results, use fresh baking soda.
