German Chocolate Caramel Nut Brownies

These delicious brownies start with a german chocolate cake mix, then topped off with a combination of pecans, caramels, and chocolate chips.

Ingredients

1 (18.25-ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
1/2 cup butter or margarine, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup evaporated milk
3/4 cup pecans, chopped
1 (14 ounce) package soft caramel candies
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan using Pan Release or baking spray with flour.

In a medium bowl, combine cake mix, butter, vanilla, and 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Blend well, then stir in chopped pecans. Spread 1/2 of the batter into prepared baking pan. Bake for 6 minutes.

In the top of a double boiler over simmering water, melt caramel candies and stir in the other 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Stir until smooth. Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips over the baked cake mixture and spread the melted caramel mixture on top. Pour the remaining batter on top of caramel mixture.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted halfway between the edge and center comes out clean. Do not overbake. Center should be set (slightly sticky) but not dry. Cool on wire cooling rack before cutting.
