Maple Brownies

These delicious brownies are rich with the added flavor of maple syrup! This recipe came from the Better Homes and Gardens Heritage Cookbook, printed in 1978.

24 brownies

2 large eggs
3/4 cup granulated (white) sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup maple syrup
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
sifted confectioners' (powdered) sugar

Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease an 8 or 9-inch square baking pan with Pan Release or baking spray with flour.

In a medium mixing bowl beat together eggs, sugar and vanilla. Add syrup and mix well. In a sauce pan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat. Blend in egg mixture. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Stir into chocolate mixture. Stir in nuts. Spread batter in prepared baking pan.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted halfway between the edge and center comes out clean. Do not overbake. Center should be set (slightly sticky) but not dry. Cool on wire cooling rack. Dust with powdered sugar. Cut into squares.
