Molasses Spice Cookies

These buttery molasses cookies are packed with wonderful spices. Your house will be filled with a wonderful aroma as they bake. These cookies are perfect for using the camel design template.

5 to 6 dozen

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon mace
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup granulated (white) sugar
1 large egg
1/4 cup molasses

Preheat oven to 375°F (191°C). Sift together flour, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, mace, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and molasses. Gradually blend in flour mixture.

Place design plate on press and fill. Form cookies on ungreased baking sheets, 1 inch apart.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until set and lightly brown. Remove from oven and cool for 1 minute. Remove cookies from baking sheet and place on wire cooling rack until cool.

Use camel design plate. Place a dragee — better known as "those little silver balls" — for the eye of the camel before baking.
