Spiced Chili

Sit back and enjoy the game with this delicious chili. Making it in the slow cooker allows the flavors to mingle slowly for several hours.

Yield

about 3 quarts (12 servings)

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 (16 ounce) cans kidney beans, rinsed and drained
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 (14.5 ounce) cans stewed tomatoes, cut up
1 cup water
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup chili powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
shredded cheddar cheese, optional

Directions

In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Drain.

Transfer to a 5-quart slow cooker. Stir in the beans, tomato sauce, tomatoes, water and seasonings. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours. Discard bay leaves. Garnish with cheese if desired.
