Build a Better Sandwich

Granny Smith Turkey Sandwich

(Family Features) - Is your lunch bland and boring? Well, it might be time for a sandwich makeover. By simply mixing up your ingredients and adding a few sandwich architecture tricks, you can build a sandwich that rivals those much-anticipated post-holiday sandwiches any day of the year.

Bread. Great bread is the foundation of any delicious sandwich, so break out of the sliced bread rut with some new options.

  • Firm breads like ciabatta and crusty rolls soak up the flavors of moist ingredients such as mayonnaise and dressings. To keep the sandwich filling in place, hollow out the roll to create a pocket to hold in all your sandwich goodness.
  • Pair rye bread's bold flavor with flavorful meats like slow cooked ham.
  • Say so long to the slice and hello to a whole wheat pita or thin multigrain bun.

Spreads. Layer on the flavor with a delicious new sandwich spread.

  • Serve up some fun with flavored mayos, dressings or mustards served as a side dip.
  • Jazz it up with a vinaigrette or dressing. To keep breads from getting soggy, toss lettuce, veggies or meats with your favorite dressing before placing on your sandwich.  Remember, a slice of cheese can act as a shield to protect the bread from getting soggy.
  • Try a taste of the Mediterranean with prepared pesto, olive tapenade or hummus.

Meat. If you long for the taste, texture and flavor of that carved-off-the-holiday-roast goodness, you no longer have to wait for the holidays.

  • New Oscar Mayer Carving Board Meats deliver a great homemade taste. Made from high quality cuts of your favorite varieties including: Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, Rotisserie Seasoned Chicken Breast, Slow Cooked Ham and Slow Roasted Roast Beef.

Produce. Boost flavor and your fruit and veggie intake.

  • Greens can add flavor as well as texture to a sandwich. Bibb lettuce has a sweet, mild flavor, while Romaine and Arugula have bolder tastes.
  • Apples bring sweetness and crunch. Try slices of sweet-tart Granny Smith with turkey (in the recipe below), or a Pink Lady with ham and cheddar on rye. You can keep apple slices from turning brown by brushing them lightly with a little lemon juice.
  • Tomatoes are a sandwich favorite, but have you tried roasted red peppers or caramelized onions? Avocados, cucumbers and sprouts also make great sandwich partners. If you're set on tomatoes, try a thick slice of an heirloom variety, and enjoy flavors as rich and beautiful as their colors.
